![]() Further, First rock inscription, Second pillar inscription and Dillitopra inscription and Wewalkatiya inscription were provide ample evidences of the attempts made by the monarch to safeguard the lives of not only human beings but also animals. This was confirmed by Bhuripanna Jathaka Story, Kuutadanta Sutta, Anuradhapura slab inscription, Puliyankulima slab inscription, Jethawana slab inscription, Rawana inscription, Munasinghagama inscription, Athakanda inscription and some other archeological findings of Anuradhapura period. Accordingly, the policies of the monarch had been influenced by Buddhist philosophical ideas. According to the results of the study, in Anuradhapura Kingdom the environmental policy had been influenced by the factors such as the monarch being a Buddhist, Sri Lanka being a Buddhist country. ![]() Further, stone inscriptions like Rock inscriptions, Pillar inscriptions, Slab inscriptions and some other epigraphic were also used. Mainly literary and epigraphic sources were used to find out the relevant data such as Mahawanshaya, Jathaka Stories etc. Study was mainly carried out according to the secondary data considering Anuradhapura Kingdom as the study period. With that background, this study is an evaluation of the ancient inscriptions as historical evidence for conserving the environment in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka with its rich culture in ancient civilization has provided substantial evidence for the application of environmental conservation concepts and theories. This has always been reflected in a variety of traditional practices, religious beliefs, rituals, inscriptions as well as in the daily lives of people in ancient times. ![]() Virtually a number of countries in the world have rich ancient evidence to corroborate how people lived harmony with nature. The two words man and the environment are not new in human history and the interaction between them is well established.
